The dictionary defines "hero" as someone who displays great courage.

McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren believes the term could also be defined by county resident Laura Ward.

Ward, whose quick thinking and bravery last year saved a young girl from kidnapping, received a special commendation from Nygren last week for her heroic actions.

"Her intervention stopped that child from being sexually molested," Nygren said.

"The fact that she went to the child and drove the suspect off showed a great deal of courage."...
