Three newcomers are pursuing two available 6-year terms this spring on the Naperville Park District board.

The candidates on the April 5 ballot are Charles Brown, Marie Todd and Virginia Wisdom.

The Daily Herald asked the candidates a series of questions involving issues facing the park district. Here are their responses:

Q. Why are you running for park board?

Charles Brown: I believe I can help re-establish credibility in the park district. My first priority would be to listen. Listen to what the other commissioners are proposing and why. Listen to what the people in Naperville want from the park district.

Marie Todd: I have much to offer. I have always been active. I'm involved in recreation activities. I consider myself an athlete and I've also been a coach. I can provide representation for the community on many levels.

My daughter was involved in park programs; I've been involved in park programs and as I get older, I still want to be active.

Additionally, I'm a businesswoman with 27 years' experience. I bring the skills of a manager who knows how to address problems and bring issues to resolution. As a manager of a company that downsized significantly in the past four years, I know how to make hard decisions.

Given the economy, we need to provide programs that are affordable and find alternate funding to keep costs low. My priority is to ensure the district provides recreational activities that meet the needs of all community members and keep the fees affordable.
