Dist. 211 needs to get house in order

To the editor: High School District 211 is holding a tax referendum on April 5. A vote for a higher tax rate would reward fiscal irresponsibility.

For the past decade, the District 211 Board of Education has financed deficits with short-term borrowing. Instead of living within its means the way District 54 does, the 211 board has sold tens of millions of dollars in bonds to pay for day-to-day operating expenses.

This piles interest payments on the backs of weary taxpayers. It makes as much sense as a family taking out a loan to pay for groceries.

It's instructive that, the school board has neither admitted its borrowing practices are imprudent, nor has it pledged to discontinue this practice if the referendum passes.

In sum, the District 211 Board has proven it cannot be trusted to responsibly manage taxpayer dollars. Voters would be foolish to entrust the same board with even more of their hard-earned dollars.

Former mayor gets behind McLeod

To the editor: I am pleased to have the opportunity to write this letter of endorsement for Mayor Bill McLeod of Hoffman Estates. I have had the pleasure of working with Mayor McLeod on major initiatives impacting our areas and found him to have a clear vision for the future based upon a strong sense of community and family values.

His skill of developing collaborative partnerships between the public and private sectors is much-admired by his peers with a direct and positive result for the citizens of Hoffman Estates.

Mayor McLeod clearly understands the challenges facing municipal governments in this ever-changing world we live in. He has demonstrated the necessary to successfully confront and solve important regional and local issues.

I choose my endorsements carefully and strongly feel that Mayor McLeod has clearly demonstrated that he has the skills to continue to move Hoffman Estates forward, based on a clear understanding of citizen concerns. This understanding has resulted in a clear vision for the future.

I strongly recommend that those citizens who are interested, engaged and informed give Mayor McLeod their vote on April 5.

She's upset with fee hike at park district

To the editor: I am upset with the Schaumburg Park District. They sent us (Club 55 members) a letter stating they are raising our spring 2005 fees 45 percent because of operational costs!

What costs? They haven't increased our instructors' salaries, which are warranted. We, Club 55...
