The guidelines issued by the State Bank on classification of investments by the banks oblige them to categorize their portfolios in accordance with a prescribed scheme and show losses booked on their investments in a transparent manner in their balance sheets. All banks and DFIs, according to the circular, have to classify their investment portfolios into three key categories, namely, "Held to Maturity", "Available for Sale" and "Held for Trading'. Securities acquired by banks or DFIs with the intention and ability to hold them upto maturity will be placed under the heading "Held to Maturity", while those acquired with the intention to trade taking advantage of short-term market or interest rate movements would be placed under the heading "Held for Trading".
