Mamoru Takuma pleaded guilty Thursday to stabbing eight children to death and injuring 13 others and two teachers in a mass killing at an elementary school in Osaka Prefecture in June.

''It is true I fatally stabbed children and others with a kitchen knife. I want to atone for my offenses with my life,'' Takuma, a 38-year-old resident of Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, told the Osaka District Court during the first hearing of his trial.

Takuma's lawyers also admitted to their client's guilt, but demanded that the court carefully judge the competency of their client, saying he may have committed the killings in a state of temporarily insanity...
