TOKYO, Dec. 20 Kyodo

The Nikkei Stock Average closed lower Thursday on weak high-technology issues while the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) recovered the 1,000 level due to increased buybacks of banks and low-priced issues.

The 225-issue Nikkei dropped 37.41 points, or 0.36%, to close at 10,434.52.
