All 10 of Japan's biggest life insurers reported sharp falls Wednesday in key indicators of their ability to pay out policy obligations in the six months to Sept. 30 as they booked appraisal losses on stock portfolios due to falling share prices.

Their financial health was also damaged by the severe business environment, reflected in negative spreads, or the gaps between their guaranteed yields to policyholders and investment returns.
