Newspapers are redrawing the boundaries for their on-line communities as local groups' interest in posting events and information voluntarily has flagged.

In Maine, the three-year-old statewide MaineCommunities.com has ceased to provide free web pages to local groups. Although more than 1500 organizations signed up at one time or another to post their news on pages they designed through the site, the sponsoring MaineToday.com -- the web site of Blethen Maine Newspapers of Portland -- decided to pull the plug as of Aug. 31.
