Airline passengers will soon have a choice of coffee, tea or the Web.

And the two companies providing the two-way e-mail and Internet connections, Boeing Co. and Seattle's Tenzing Communications Inc., are in a tight race to lock up deals with commercial airlines.

Though it remains to be seen whether this technology will work as advertised and whether consumers will adopt it as hoped, the matchup has the makings of a classic high-tech showdown.

Boeing plans to roll out broadband technology next year providing real-time Internet and e-mail services, through Connexion by Boeing, its joint venture with Elk Grove Township's UAL Corp., American Airlines' Texas-based parent AMR Corp. and Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc.

Tenzing, which is 30%-owned by Boeing's European rival Airbus, is already on the market with a narrowband cache-and-hold...
