Article Excerpt If USFreightways Corp. Chairman and CEO Samuel K. Skinner wants a reminder of the economy's weak condition, he need only weigh his trucks.
The average shipment weight for the Chicago-based company's five regional units, which haul everything from tire rims to cosmetics, fell 2.5% to 1,117 pounds during the second quarter, following a 2.3% drop in the first quarter.
Based on conversations with customers, the trucks won't be getting heavier anytime soon.
``We do not think we are on the uptick'' and ``it may be getting worse before it gets better,'' Mr. Skinner says. ``We're planning as if this will continue through the end of the year and into early next year.''
Mr. Skinner's gloomy outlook is typical of local executives who have abandoned earlier hopes of a sharp second-half rebound, are still waiting to see orders pick up and are resigned to an economy that-provided it skirts recession-will grow sluggishly at best.
