They are a class all their own, distinguishing themselves from a generation of ''kogyaru'' teens who used to stand out among pedestrians in the street by putting on bizarre makeup and wearing platform shoes.

They are primary school children and middle school students caught up in a cosmetics boom that is currently sweeping Japan.

Some cosmetics makers are cashing in, turning out mascara and the glittering lipstick now in vogue. These are full-fledged cosmetics, but are exclusively made to be gentle to small children's skin.

Many early teens wear makeup in imitation of their singer idols such as ''Morning Musume,'' a group of nine teenagers, including those aged 13.
