TOKYO, June 15 Kyodo

Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) is in a predicament in the wake of moves to internationally tighten tobacco regulations and slow progress in the diversification of its business activities at home.

The world's third-largest tobacco company faces ''adverse winds'' as it witnesses surging imports of foreign-brand cigarettes year after year while domestic demand continues to fall.

Industry analysts say JT will have a tough road ahead as it must cope with the consequence of having been complacent about its monopoly in the manufacture of cigarettes in the country.

At a news conference announcing the JT group's consolidated settlement of accounts for the business year ended in March, JT President Katsuhiko Honda firmly declared, ''We will protect our trade name 'Mild...
