TOKYO, June 13 Kyodo

Acid rain has lashed the Kanto region in the past 10 months apparently as a result of volcanic activity on Miyakejima Island about 200 kilometers south of Tokyo, government sources said Tuesday.

This month, the acid rain observed in Yokohama and Tokorozawa, in Saitama Prefecture showed a pH level of 3, which is as acid as vinegar, the sources said.

A pH level of 7 means a neutral position between acidity and alkalinity. The lower the figure the greater the acidity....
