When I write this column, I try to be positive. I like to share information about pop culture, especially music, that I like, and offer what I hope are insights that will entertain my readers and perhaps give a new perspective on various aspects of Japanese pop culture. I don't like being gratuitously negative.

Which makes it difficult for me to write about this month's topic: music programs on Japanese TV. I won't beat around the bush -- I think most of them are rubbish. TV music programs, especially those on the national networks, are generally banal, mediocre, superficial, inane, cheesy and -- worst of all -- they don't have enough music.
