As an elementary school student in Yokohama more than 10 years ago, Makiko could not understand what her father meant when he told her not to be discouraged and to be proud of herself.

''I thought at the time my father did not understand my feelings,'' says Makiko, who wished not to reveal her family name. But her father's words eventually saved her, she says. She has overcome her difficulties and is now a university junior.
