While Northwest Airlines Corp. and Wayne County officials last August held a ceremony marking the placement of the final piece of structural steel at Detroit Metropolitan Airport's midfield terminal, a contractor dispute brewed behind the scenes.

That dispute prompted a thicket of lawsuits filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit. The lawsuits detail claims of design errors and weather problems that construction contractor Hunt Construction Group and steel-erection contractor Haven Steel Co. said cost extra money and caused delays.
