A WORK OF ART IN PROGRESS

These are exciting days at the Ringling as signs of growth and renewal are evident throughout the estate. Fittingly, a grand new entrance will soon utilize the historic Ca d'Zan Gatehouse to welcome guests to the new Visitors Pavilion. This project, as well as the addition to the Museum of Art and the new Education/Conservation Complex, was designed by Yann R. Weymouth, AIA, the internationally distinguished architect and Design Director of Hellmuth, Obata, + Kassbaum (HOK Florida).

"Amazement is not the word that conveys to the intelligent mind that any man could accomplish in a life time, what the late Mr. John Ringling exhibits in his magnificent collection ... It compels respect, admiration, and much thought for this one man achievement." --Jonce McGurk, Appraisal of The Contents of The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, 1938

SPECIAL EXHIBITION

Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius

JANUARY 29-APRIL 10, 2005

Ansel Adams is among the few photographers in history whose name and work enjoy worldwide recognition. His stunning landscapes and intimate still lifes continue to captivate viewers. While many come to know his work through widely-published books, postcards, posters, and calendars, relatively few have actually seen his lushly-printed original images. To do so is to see the genius in both his craft of printing and his artful composition.

Inspired by the 100th anniversary of Adams' birth in 2002, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film revisited its extensive collection of Adams' work, creating this new exhibition of 150 photographs that reflects his full career.

The exhibition presents work from the 1920s through the 1960s, including an early 1927 portfolio of rare Parmelian prints, and features many of Adams' most beloved images of the American West, such as Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941 or Mount Williamson from Manzanar, California, ca. 1944. Also included are equally stupendous (if less well-known) images such as Mud Hills, Arizona or Water and Foam, and the wonderful abstract titled simply, Stained Wallpaper Near Alturas, Calif.

Clyde Butcher: Black & White Landscape Photography

In doing so, he received the Heartland Community Service Award for his work in educating Floridians about the beauty of...
