The first paragraph of editor Emmanuel S. Nelson's preface to Contemporary Gay American Poets and Playwrights announces a lofty goal for the book. Because "foundational texts, such as dictionaries, sourcebooks, and encyclopedias, are indispensable for the legitimization as well as institutionalization of any ... emergent field of knowledge," Nelson wants his A-to-Z guide to "help define the new discipline, create a necessary knowledge base, and form an epistemological framework that can be shared by scholars in the field." This sounds awfully dry, but the language should not obscure the importance--and potential controversial nature--of the intent.
