One of the hoariest rules of book reviewing is to review the book the author wrote rather than the one the reviewer wishes he had. That having been said, it's too bad that Jim Elledge's Masquerade, an anthology of what he terms "queer poetry," doesn't have more of a definite personality. It falls somewhere in between an academic book and a popular anthology, and even within its defined scope--poets living in the United States and writing pre-World War II--it remains a sprawling, almost unwieldy collection of nearly one hundred poets. Its evident charms, though, outweigh any deficiencies.
