Bartlett should read kindergarten book

To the editor: This is a thank-you letter to Elgin Teachers Association President Tim Davis, Superintendent Connie L. Neale and the Elgin Area School District U-46 school board for monitoring the Bartlett disconnection situation.

While it saddens me that anyone has to spend their time and my money on this issue when there are real educational topics that need attention (i.e. curriculum development, ongoing staff development, textbook adoptions, support program development, facilities improvement, teacher evaluation, staff assignments, supervision, transportation, etc.), it is reassuring to know the foundations of U-46 remain focused on doing what's best for the entire U-46 community.

The fact that U-46 has been out front of other school districts in the development of small learning communities, academies and schools-within-school programs has been lost on these Bartlett residents.

Instead of working with the board to enhance these programs and develop more opportunities for greater student learning, they distract the focus by continuing this disconnection movement.

Bartlett residents voted to spend their money, and a lot of it, on study after study and people to promote their self-serving interests, instead of focusing on the needs of their children to learn how to be part of a bigger community.

Wouldn't it be nice if they could teach their children how to work well with others?

The fact is the entire U-46 family has been or can be disrupted by this topic, and Bartlett trustees just don't seem to care. This is not an education or a legislative issue just for the Bartlett community.

In fact, this is clearly not an issue for the Bartlett trustees, as they have hired an "expert" from outside of the village to "map an academic foundation for a new district."

Isn't it ironic the village wants a new district "where all Bartlett residents" can send their children," yet it hires someone from outside the community to "map" what it wants?

I think what Bartlett officials really need is for that educational expert to teach them a lesson from "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten": how to play nice, hold hands with their neighbor and share.

Isn't there enough territorial fighting going on in the world?
