...between 15-23 September, 2002. They were able see first hand under what conditions SEWA has organized, and discussed its organizing model. It was especially important and fruitful for women home based workers to have the opportunity to observe and discuss in the beginning of their organizing efforts in Turkey. This important activity was realized with support from the Global Fund for Women by the Working Group on Women Home-based Workers in Turkey in cooperation with Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) in India. Since the Habitat Conference in 1996 a number of SEWA representatives had visited the home-based workers in Turkey encouraging and inviting a visit from the women home-based workers in Turkey to SEWA in Ahmedabad.

Who are women home based workers?

Home-based work is quite prevalent around the world and in Turkey. In Turkey it is widespread in a number of key sectors such as garments, footwear, electrical equipment, and electronics and food processing. The commodities in these sectors reach local, national and international markets. Turkey has a special importance with respect to home-based work. First of all it is an intermediary country in the international subcontracting chains. The products produced in individual households make their way into the international markets. Turkey also has a large number of home-based workers who make and sell products and provide services on their own-accounts. As the employers and the products are in the international markets, then the workers need to look for their rights beyond the national arena as well. Turkey is in a strategic position to form such international alliances for organizing and negotiating rights for home-based workers.

Although it is a prevalent and a growing form of work, home based work is not visible enough both in terms of the amounts of economic value it creates and also in terms of the large numbers of workers who are engaged in this type of work. For this reason, home...
