Sabine Prator and Christoph K. Neumann edited a two volume book of collected papers that were originally presented in 1997 at the Munich Institute on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Prof. Dr. Hans Georg Majer, the well known Ottomanist. The contents of the book are divided into three parts, on the themes of 'woman', 'art' and 'scholars'. One volume of the book is reserved for topics on women in the Ottoman history, art and literature, as Majer himself was also involved in his research topics, particularly with the themes of the imperial Harem.
The book begins with brief introduction about Majer and explains the aim of the book entitled "In appreciation of Hans Georg Majer" written both in German and English and signed by Prator and Neumann, the editors of the book. There is also bibliography of works published by Hans Georg Majer, which lists all his published works.
The papers originally presented at the Munich Institute were on the themes about "arts, women and scholars" which were also the main interest of research areas of Prof. Majer since he dedicated his academic life to the study of the Ottoman history and the women within the Imperial Harem.
The book is comprised of forty articles written in English, German and French. Some texts originally translated in Turkish appear to have been translated to German by the editors of the book and unfortunately abstracts in other languages, particularly in Turkish and English, have been omitted. It is upsetting to see that in a book about Ottoman studies written in several languages by several colleagues including Turkish, omitted publication of the articles in Turkish.
