Meagan Chatwood, 15, of Eugene, will return to the Oregon Horse Center on Prairie Road this weekend as her Willamette High School equestrian team prepares for its second South Valley district meet. The 23-event competition lasts all day Friday, Saturday and up to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Willamette and Siuslaw are two of the prep equestrian program's newest members, and 13 of the 19 participating schools are from Lane County. Chatwood, a rider since she got her first pony at age 8, recorded Willamette's only "top three" placement in the February meet, while Meagan's sister, Lacie, was the team's top individual scorer.

Krista Weaver, of Florence, a bowler since fourth grade, will lead her Siuslaw High School team into the state high school bowling tournament at Medford this weekend as the Vikings seek back-to-back state championships. Weaver was the District 4 MVP earlier this month as Siuslaw edged Thurston by four pins for the regional title. Thurston and North Bend will join Siuslaw at the state tournament, all three schools having won the state high school girls bowling championship over the past dozen years. On the boys side, North Bend, Siuslaw and Springfield will be the local representatives. North Bend's district MVP Bobby Femling and four teammates finished among the top seven bowlers at district.

The University of Oregon Ice Hockey Club won its first-ever Pac-8 tournament championship last week at Berkeley, outscoring California 7-3 in the semifinal and edging Washington 3-2 in the final. Duck forward Nate King, a senior from Fairbanks, Alaska, scored three goals and two assists against second-seed California and was named tournament MVP. Ted Martin, Cal Brackin and Scott Tedrick also scored as Oregon twice came from behind against Cal. Meanwhile fourth-seed Washington defeated top-seed UCLA 6-4 to set up an all-Northwest final. Against the Huskies, Jason Savich and Ryan Jones gave the Ducks a 2-0 first period lead that they never lost. Martin added the winning goal and freshman goalkeeper Matt Nuernberg, who recorded 52 saves in the two games, blanked Washington in the final period for the championship victory. Oregon's Scott McCallum received Pac-8 Coach of the Year honors as the Ducks recorded their first 20-win season (22-4-2) after finishing 2-24 a year ago.
