The hoop dreams of Ted Glass were forged on a blustery winter's night 73 years ago.

A snowstorm swept through the Upper Plains states, stranding the barnstorming Harlem Globetrotters basketball team in tiny Pukwana, S.D., about 125 miles west of Sioux Falls.

Town merchants pooled $100 for the Globetrotters to play Pukwana's high school team, led by Glass and his older brother, Jack.

The game was played at a makeshift basketball court at City Hall with 150 of the town's 200 in attendance, Glass said.

The Globetrotters amazed with their ball handling, dribbling and passing. Glass doesn't recall the final score - only that the Globetrotters, as always, prevailed. "They passed the ball around a lot and put on a great show," he said.
