PORTLAND - She's the "Shampang" of boxers. Eugene's own "Million Dollar Baby." And she has to be one of the world's few boxing grandmothers.
Linda Shampang, who teaches everything from kickboxing to regular boxing to aqua aerobics at Oakway Fitness Center, is itching for a fight. At age 50, she's ready to rumble.
"She's one of my best sparring partners," says Julie Bishop, who teaches boxing at the Grand Avenue Boxing Gym in northeast Portland and is a former sparring partner of Tonya Harding, Portland's own Olympic figure skater turned pro boxer. `(Shampang) is in really good condition and she knows what she's doing in there."
Shampang is awaiting her first professional fight. Yet she began following her dream long before "Million Dollar Baby" - the much-talked-about boxing drama that could take the Best Picture Oscar tonight - put a spotlight on women's boxing.
Shampang, who lives in Leaburg with her husband Rocky (no, he's not a boxer), often comes to Grand Avenue to spar because she can't find any competition in Lane County. She took up boxing three years ago and, although she's yet to have an actual fight, she received her professional license Oct. 17 from the Oregon State Boxing and Wrestling Commission. Her trainer, former pro boxer Kip Triplett of Creswell, has tentatively lined up her first opponent for a March 24 "featherweight" bout at a casino in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
