Question: My company pays employees on a monthly basis and the payroll assistant always has to work several extra hours during the week that paychecks are due. I paid my old payroll assistant a salary, so I never paid her for the overtime hours she repeatedly claimed to have worked during payroll periods.

She complained so much about being overworked and not getting overtime pay for those few extra hours a month that I finally had to fire her. When I hired a new payroll assistant, I told her that I want to start paying all of our employees a salary so that I won't have to deal with any more complaints about not getting overtime pay. She told me that paying a salary doesn't automatically mean an employee isn't entitled to get paid for overtime hours.
