It was no small thing - the oath 24 newly minted Americans took on Friday.

They stood before Judge Thomas Coffin in a federal courtroom on a cloudy Eugene morning and promised to renounce all loyalty to their countries of origin in favor of a new obligation to the United States.

They came from the farthest flung corners of the globe: from Russia and China; Mexico and Thailand; Colombia and Fiji; Iran, India and Indonesia. They left behind family and friends in Portugal and the Philippines, Brazil and Britain to embrace a new circle of friends and loved ones in Eugene.

Before being approved for citizenship, they had to live here five years - three for those who had married Americans. They needed "good moral character" - a criminal...
