A new world production record for direct reduced iron was set last year with a total output of 49.45 million tons, 10 percent more than the previous record set in 2002, according to data gathered by Midrex Technologies Inc.

Midrex plants led DRI production with 64.6 percent of world production. HYL followed with 19.7 percent and all other technologies, including gas-based and coal-based, made up the remaining 15.7 percent.
