An Escondido-based company--or at least one lifesaving piece of its equipment--just happened to be where it was most needed after southern India was ravaged by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Dec. 26.

Pure-O-Tech Inc., which specializes in water treatment, food safety and decontamination, is in the final stages of getting its Enviro-Wash water treatment system up and running. It will convert up to 4,000 gallons of contaminated water to drinking water every 24 hours, enough for an estimated 1,000 people a day.

Pure-O-Tech's presence in the area actually dates back to March. Then, senior executives of the company had met with India President Abdul Kamal to discuss a possible business arrangement to provide safe drinking water for villages in rural India, using the company's patented purification system.

Pure-O-Tech's team in India includes Dr. Govindarajalu Krishnamoorthy, who is on sabbatical from San Diego State University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and...
