Jan Allen, an independent meeting planner from Louisiana, hadn't intended to bring a piece of business when she joined 2,700 members of Meeting Professionals International for its education conference at the San Diego Convention Center.

As an account executive with the New Orleans firm Destinator, seeing what San Diego has to offer was part of her agenda, as was learning the latest developments in her industry. But a "fam trip"--an industry term for familiarization tour--to a North County hotel may have saved the day for her with a picky corporate client looking for an ideal summertime getaway to mix pleasure with business, she said.

And that's exactly what local tourism venues, including the Convention Center, the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel and other hotels and attractions hoped would happen when they contributed $1.7 million worth of services and goods to help...
