Robinson was born in Montreal, Canada, lived in Great Britain while he was young, and received his post-secondary education in the United States. His undergraduate work was done at Miami University of Ohio, obtaining B.A. degree in 1936. His M.A. degree was from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1938) and he earned his Ph.D. degree from The Ohio State University in 1947. As a geographer, his passion and expertise was cartography. From the time of his initial interest in cartography until his passing on October 10, 2004, the field of cartography has undergone several revolutions, transforming from hand-drawn maps (a tradition of several thousand years in human history) through mechanical and photographic production technologies of map production to different stages and levels of sophistication in digital cartography and merging into what is considered today as Geographic Information Science. Through it all, few cartographers would come close to Robinson's lifelong contribution to and influence on the field of cartography, not just in the United States, but worldwide.
