As I was completing my reading of Dawne Moon's important study of American religion and homosexuality--God, Sex, & Politics: Homosexuality and Everyday Theologies--an article appeared in The New York Times which told of a rupture within the U.S. Episcopal Church. Three churches announced they were leaving the Los Angeles Diocese and aligning themselves with the Anglican Church of Uganda. The reason for the schism was over the consecration as bishop of New Hampshire of the Rev. V. Gene Robinson and other efforts at reconciliation toward gay members of the church. Since money and property--and lawsuits--to say nothing of church history are involved in this decision, it struck me as a radical move.
