One should be wary of praising too disproportionately Edmund White's talents as an occasional essayist. After all, he has pioneered what he calls autofiction--a fictional combination of autobiography and imagination--in his trilogy A Boy's Own Story, The Beautiful Room Is Empty and The Farewell Symphony (surely Christopher Isherwood must have been something of a precursor in this genre). He has authored, as well, the masterly biography Genet--one of the most absorbing pieces in Arts and Letters chronicles his efforts to track down the facts of this reclusive and rebarbative author's life.
