The reason for this no-start when cold may be quite simple and easy to remedy. Or it may take a little more work to get the beast up and running. First, let's take a quick look at how the cold could shut your diesel down before it ever gets going.
Diesels, of course, operate on very high compression, and have no ignition system. They only operate when the fuel and air mixture in the cylinder ignites as a result of the heat generated by compressing it. There are no spark plugs to ignite the fuel in the engine--compression, and the heat it generates, does it.
