6 vie for New Rochelle downtown project.

The New Rochelle City Council will soon narrow down from six to three the developers vying for rights to redevelop a nearly 2-acre city-owned downtown property bordered by Church and Division Streets near Main Street.

A decision is likely by the spring or summer, Mayor Timothy C. Idoni said.

The "Queen City on the Sound" hopes to add a little more luster to its commercial hub by selling the site of a 388-space municipal garage to a private developer that would build a high-rise condominium apartment building and possibly retail space, as well as new parking spaces.

"It's really exalting to see this kind of interest in New Rochelle," said Craig King, city commissioner of development.

Under consideration for redeveloping the 1.78-acre property:

* LCOR Inc. of Berwyn, Pa., developer of the 500-apartment Bank Street Commons in downtown White Plains.
