Article Excerpt When Peter Rohlf took over Rohlfs Stained & Leaded Glass Inc. after his mother retired in 1968, he decided to disregard one piece of advice she gave him.
"She told me, 'Don't grow too big.' But we did become one of the biggest companies in the business," said Rohlf, the chief executive officer of the company and co-owner with his two sons, Peter Hans and Gregory. The company went from about four employees to 35 today and handles some of the biggest stained-glass projects in the country.
Light shines through the company's glass windows In St. John the Divine Church and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, at Yale and Fordham universities, Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, some of the stained glass at the recently restored City Hall subway station in Manhattan, in Caracas, Venezuela, and Israel.
"I think it's because we do a lot more marketing," he said. "We put a lot of money back into the business. We do a lot of advertising. We do a lot of mailings. We read construction reports.... We do a lot of cold calling. We mail all these people, then we'll do follow-ups on the phone."
