Young Wall Street mavens, the next generation of corporate honchos and sharp entrepreneurs are expanding the typical vision of a suburban homestead, providing the steady force that's driving the area's market for $1 million homes.

That seems to be the consensus from area brokers and builders on why, in a county where land is scarce and many people talk about a need for midmarket housing, that $1 million-plus homes continue to sell like hot cakes.

"There's been a quite a growth in the past five years of young people who have become quite successful either in the finance world, corporate life or as an entrepreneur," said Barbara Cleary, whose brokerage sells luxury homes in New Canaan, Darien and Wilton.

"In general, that's who's coming to buy. They're young, they have children under 10, they want to put down roots and find an environment they feel comfortable in with good schools," she said.

Julianne C. Ward of Prudential Connecticut Realty in Greenwich has been focused on selling newly constructed homes in the town.
