Richard A. Berman says the birthday he celebrated earlier this month was among his happiest.
It was a double occasion, 60 years young, the last 10 of them as president of Manhattanville College in Purchase. While a blizzard raged outside, 350 students, faculty members and others braved the snow and wind to celebrate with Berman at the college's Reid Castle.
"01/23/45. It's the perfect birthday," Berman chuckled.
Over the past decade, Manhattanville has generated some other nice numbers: The college finished the year ending June 30, 2003, with a surplus of more than $3 million on $42 million in tuition and fees. It has operated in the black each year since Berman's first full year, when the $661,000 surplus was the college's first since 1989-90.
The number of students has climbed from 660 to 1,500 undergrads, with another 1,000 on the graduate-level.
