President Bush and the Republican leaders of Congress have made it clear that so-called tort reform will be on their agenda for this year. Unfortunately, the debate is fueled by myths that present a distorted view of this issue.

Paid lobbyists and other advocates for tort reform claim that lawsuits cause many financial ills in our country. They say lawsuits raise the cost of health care and consumer products. It's all the fault, they say, of contingency fee lawyers and a "litigation culture" that leads people to sue anytime anything goes wrong, regardless of fault.
