Article Excerpt Nonprofit agencies are a larger part of the county's economy than most people realize, according to area nonprofit officials.
In addition to providing needed services, nonprofit agencies pump billions of dollars into the county economy and create close to one in every 10 local jobs, according to a recent study.
"There are those who see the nonprofit sector as a drain on the economy, but it's a vital part of the economy," said Ralph Gregory, president of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam, based in White Plains.
According to a report issued last May by Pace University and The Business Council of Westchester, as of 2000, the last year for which IRS data was available, the county's not-for-profit organizations employed more than 35,000 people, accounting for 8.7 percent of the county's work force, and generated $3.6 billion in economic activity in 2000.
Westchester has more than 1,100 not-for-profits with at least $25,000 in annual gross receipts each, paying $1.5 billion in wages combined.
Many nonprofits also have formed partnerships with area businesses, offering services for employees, Gregory said.
