Unable to reverse recurring budget deficits despite layoffs and fund-raisers headed by high-profile speakers, the chief executive officer of the American Red Cross in Westchester County has resigned after 19 years in the job.

Robert Lenseth's resignation from the White Plains organization took effect immediately, the Red Cross chapter said in a statement last week.

While Lenseth said he quit voluntarily, his departure follows two full years of operating losses and the likelihood of a third year in the red.

"I think it was just a matter of, we needed to make a change," Lenseth said.
