Human resource professionals agree that outsourcing functions in their departments is a continuing trend, but they differ on where it will end up.

At some companies, said Greg Chartier a human resources consultant in White Plains, "They're outsourcing HR completely. You might've had one traditional HR person and then a clerk.... Now, they're bringing in a Gevity, for instance."

Barbara Mohl, assistant vice president for human resources at Emisphere Technologies Inc., a Tarrytown biotechnology company, believes human resource professionals will always be useful to a company's bottom line by helping to create and implement a company strategy for hiring, compensating and recognizing employees.

Mohl is one of three employees in the department at Emisphere, which has about 120 employees. Outside vendors are more accurate administrators of benefits plans, stock options and 401(k) retirement plans, she said. For Mohl, if a function is "routine, data driven and complex," it's a ripe candidate for outsourcing.
