Editor's note: This is the final part of a weeklong series on Lake County's 2004 newsmakers, profiling the people who made headlines throughout the past year.
Lake County lost three native sons in the line of duty overseas in 2004 - Wesley Wells of Libertyville, Geoffrey Morris of Gurnee and Jaime Moreno of Round Lake Beach.
Before joining the military, they were sons, students and neighbors here.
Morris played football for Warren Township High School. Wells worked at a moving business and tavern in Libertyville. Moreno often volunteered to drive neighbors to the Mexican consulate and bought toys for his younger relatives in Round Lake Beach.
The troops left behind wives, mothers, fathers and even an 8- year-old daughter. And memories.
Geoffrey Morris of Gurnee
It has been almost a year since Kirk Morris said goodbye in person to his oldest son.
"I remember that long embrace in January," the tearful father said.
Geoffrey Morris, a 19-year-old machine gunner from Gurnee, was killed in the war in Iraq on April 4, Palm Sunday. A January 2003 graduate of Warren Township High School, he enlisted in the Marines the following June and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines Regiment, 1st Marines Division, I Expeditionary Force.
