Learning that a 15-year-old boy suffering from cerebral palsy wasted away to almost nothing and died in his family's home horrified us.

Becoming home to the region's newest upscale shopping center excited us.

But the manhunt through Carpentersville and Algonquin terrified those in the Fox Valley for two days as police searched near our homes, schools and stores for two men suspected of carjacking and shooting an elderly Chicago man.

Downtown Algonquin resembled the set of an action flick early this September as an army of police officers wielding rifles, thermal imaging cameras and German shepherds canvassed the streets. Anyone matching the blue jeans and gray T-shirt description was stopped and searched.

Moments before, the suspects ate breakfast at Reese's Restaurant on Main Street in Algonquin. They evaded police in Carpentersville the night before where Fox View Apartment residents suspected the pair tried to buy drugs.

The three-county chase picked up again when a waitress in Algonquin noticed their nervous behavior and called police, who sent two plainclothes officers to the eatery, taking a seat in the booth beside the suspects.

After finishing their steaks and eggs, the suspects bolted out a side door.

As the search began, an unrelated attempted robbery took place at the White Hen on Route 62 and Eastgate Drive.

Meanwhile, police and dogs nabbed one carjacking suspect who fled west across Main Street through Towne Park near Berg and Armstrong streets.
