Lure fishbar, the new restaurant by Lever House partners John McDonald and Josh Pickard, is doing for SoHo what their midtown creation did for Park Avenue. It is luring a big following with a canny blend of striking decor and delicious contemporary food.
The location, a bit under the Mercer Street waterline at Spring Street, has been miraculously transformed into the interior of a luxury yacht. The shipbuilding tab was $2 million.
The setting, devised by Serge Becker and Derek Sanders, sports caulked teak decks, ivory "hulls'' with sloping windows, crisp navy-blue trim, beamed ceilings and generous spacing between white leather banquettes. That's essential. Those that gather to dine at Lure Fishbar are a casual crowd, and very noisy in their appreciation of chef Josh Capon's culinary cruise fare.
