History and location are the driving motivations behind the West Harlem Business Group's refusal to sell real estate to Columbia University for its uptown expansion. One business can trace its roots in the neighborhood back more than 100 years. All have in common the desire to stay in an area that offers easy access to most of the city. The six business owners tell their stories.

Seeking window of opportunity

Skyline windows, on broadway and West 130th Street, is no stranger to eminent domain. If the state condemns its property in the name of Columbia University's expansion, it will be the third time that the window manufacturing and installation company has been forced to move.

"We were on West 50th until 1985, when the city condemned property across the street to build a school and put in a bus lane that made it impossible for us to unload our trucks,'' says Skyline President Steven Kraus.
