Events
High school equestrians: The first of three monthly South Valley Oregon High School Equestrian Team competitions is Friday through Sunday at the Oregon Horse Center on Prairie Road. The district has grown to 19 schools this year with the addition of Willamette, Siuslaw and Brookings high schools. Other participating Lane County schools include Churchill, North Eugene, Sheldon, South Eugene, Junction City, Mohawk, Pleasant Hill, Creswell and Cottage Grove. Douglas, Coos and Curry county schools complete the field. About 190 boys and girls and their horses will compete in the events that run from 8 a.m. Friday to about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Spectators are welcome free of charge. Among the events are those with cattle (beginning at 10 a.m. Friday) and the drill teams (Saturday evening). Other three-day competitions will be held in March and April.
Middle school wrestling: All of the youth wrestling results reported in Community Sports' scoreboard are club tournaments, but a few of the smaller communities in and around Lane County still have middle school-sponsored teams. Saturday the district meet for Alsea, Central Linn, Cottage Grove, Harrisburg, Jefferson, Lowell, Mohawk/McKenzie, Oakridge, Philomath and Pleasant Hill teams will be all day at Lowell High School.
Basketball tournament: Oregon Amateur Basketball will host a tournament for boys and girls teams in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 on Feb. 12-13 in Eugene. The cost is $180 with a four-game guarantee. Already entered are teams from southwest Washington to Klamath Falls. Nike has provided gifts for all coaches. Entry forms are available online at eteamz.com/oregonamateurbasketball. Dance camp: Churchill High School's Dance Team will have its 22nd Kids' Dance Camp from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 13. The cost is $20 and kids of all ages are welcome. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Churchill cafeteria. Participants receive a free T-shirt and will perform during the evening round of the Feb. 19 Churchill Dance Classic. This event showcases 14 dance teams from throughout Oregon, including all six Eugene high schools, and an exhibition by the University of Oregon team. The Dance Classic includes an afternoon session beginning at noon and an evening session beginning at 5:30 p.m. The cafeteria will be serving food all day. The $6 adult admission ($4 for seniors and students) helps fund Churchill's travel to the state championships in Portland in March.

Youth flag football: NFL Youth Flag Football will hold a registration meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Abby's Pizza, 1976 Echo Hollow Rd. The program is still seeking volunteer coaches and can be reached at (541) 606-9626 or at info@maximussports.com.
