The wound has healed, but it left an enduring mark.

The scar on Jordan Carey's left arm stretches from his triceps to his forearm. Six inches long and an inch wide, the gash was sustained in a car accident last summer and took more than 60 stitches to close.

Now that it's healed, Carey notes with a hint of irony, it looks not unlike the laces of a football.

The accident came at a pivotal point in Carey's life. It was the summer before his sophomore season with the Oregon football team. He had failed two drug tests due to marijuana use as a freshman, but by last summer he had cleaned up his act and was hoping to earn more playing time at receiver.

Then came the accident in June, when Carey fell asleep at the wheel driving from his hometown of Olympia to Eugene. Besides opening up the cut on Carey's arm, it also opened the door to his demons of addiction, and he began smoking pot again.

In September, Carey failed another drug test and was dismissed from the team. In two seasons he had played in 10 games, and he finished with one career reception.

But what could have been a story of failure and waste has instead become one...
