Rhetoric aside, the difference between a strike against the Lane Transit District and settling a 9-month-old contract dispute comes down to about $92 per month for each of the 231 workers represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757.

That's about $21,000 per month total, or about $255,000 per year - the difference in the cost of the health care plans sought by the two sides in the dispute.

Other unresolved issues, mostly centered around "work rules" such as lunch and rest breaks and how to calculate vacation time, also carry a price tag in the fractious negotiations. But if health care fell into place, negotiators from both camps seem to believe the rest could be resolved much more easily.
