Last year's "Readin' in the Rain" selection took local readers into an Oregon of the future as imagined by Ursula LeGuin in "The Lathe of Heaven." This year, "The Jump-Off Creek" transports them to the Oregon of 1895.

The Western-inspired novel by award-winning Portland writer Molly Gloss will be the focus of the Eugene-Springfield area's fourth annual effort to get local residents reading and discussing the same book. The event kicks off at 7 p.m. Tuesday with distribution of readers' guides and a discussion of regional literature at the University of Oregon Bookstore.

"The Jump-Off Creek," an unsentimental but compelling account of Oregon homesteader Lydia Sanderson, is described by Library Journal as "Not a standard Western, but a novel of the West notable for its accurate portrayal of life on a homestead and for the quality of writing that will make readers linger."
